Llegó el paseíllo y empezó con él una corrida que pasará a la historia. Habrá que contársela a los nietos. Esta columna es un ditirambo, un epinicio. No seré yo quien le ponga pegas a lo que vimos el sábado. Háganlo otros. La afición es rezongona. No es mi caso. No soy crítico ni cronista taurino. Voy a la plaza para disfrutar y emocionarme. Si eso no sucede, me callo y punto. Nunca hablo mal de los toreros. Embestían, eran nobles, tenían trapío, se revolvían en un palmo de terreno y acudían de lejos al engaño. Al quinto le sobraban 70 kilos. Era como una mujer jamona. Tenía papada en los cuartos traseros.
El sexto, flacucho, era un cabrón. Fue muy protestado, pero no hay mal que por bien no venga, pues fue en ese toro cuando Perera puso todas las figuras de su baraja boca arriba y subió a los cielos. Antes habíamos visto mucho arte, mucho valor, mucha decencia torera. No descubro nada si digo que El Juli, paso a paso, pase a pase, va constantemente a más y madura de día en día. Torea serio, torea jondo, torea hacia dentro, ensimismado. No cabe ponerle peros. Es valor seguro, y en alza. Manzanares sacó lo mejor de lo que tiene, y tiene mucho. A su primero le hizo una faena de misa mayor, con canónigos, moscatel, botafumeiro y gregoriano. Se llevó las dos orejas, justísimas, y hubiera debido cortar otra a su segundo, que no le concedieron, porque el estoconazo con que lo despachó fue de antología.
En cuanto a Perera… No tengo palabras. Es el futuro. Arrolla. Puede con todo. Tiene ya mando supremo en todas las plazas, en todas las suertes, en todos los terrenos. Torero alto, ancho, largo, valiente, noble, apuesto y esforzado. Lo descubrí en la penúltima feria de Nimes, me impresionó y lo he visto después en muchas plazas: Barcelona, Sevilla, otra vez Nimes, Madrid, incluso en Soria… Habrá que volver a verlo el día 24 de este mes, en Cuenca, junto y frente a José Tomás.
Es el único matador que hoy por hoy puede plantar cara al rey en el favor y fragor del público, aguantar su tirón y acaso, en el futuro, destronarlo. Lo que hizo al último de la tarde, sobreponiéndose a la adversidad y el griterío, yéndose hacia él enrabietado y embraguetado, obligándolo a ser toro, creándolo desde la nada, inventándolo de arriba abajo, jugándosela en la cepa de los pitones y dando sangre, calor y vida a una faena que nadie olvidará, fue de medalla olímpica no ya en Pekín, sino en El Puerto, que no desmerece.
Y hubo todavía más en la tarde del sábado: seis estocadas pluscuamperfectas, seis toros que supieron morir con bravura, con la boca cerrada y de pie, buen trajín de los peones, buenos pares de banderillas, buenas varas… En fin: la repera o, si me permiten la broma, la reperera. Y esta tarde, la del domingo, que para ustedes será la de ayer y sobre la que escribiré mañana, José Tomás y Morante -dos formas radicalmente distintas de pisar el ruedo- correrán el albur del mano a mano. ¿Hay quién dé más? ¡A por ellos, señores, que el coraje, la bravura y la belleza ya se adivinan!
