Estoy en Tánger. O estaré, mejor dicho, dentro de unas horas. Salgo para allí. Tecleo esta entrega del blog a toda pastilla. Tengo que enviarla antes de cruzar el Estrecho, porque viajo solo y no sé abrir mi correo sin ayuda ni navegar por Internet.
Antes de recalar en mi punto de destino pasaré una noche en Assilah, acogido a la hospitalidad de una amiga que no estará allí, por desgracia, para acogerme. Tiene en la medina una casa, pero vive en Madrid y sus ocupaciones la retienen. Mi pase de pernocta responde, en realidad, a la tentación de la gula, que es pecado capital, pero inocente. En Assilah está el restaurante de mi viejo amigo Pepe, apodado el Océano, y en él se sirven a buen precio angulas, percebes, mariscos y pescados, en general, de esos que en España ya no están al alcance de los pobres ni, si me apuran, tampoco de los ricos.
No se lo pierdan, si caen por allí. Van sobre seguro. El restaurante es fácil de encontrar. Está dos pasos de la entrada de la medina, pero fuera de ella. Todo el mundo lo conoce. Díganle a Pepe que van de mi parte. Se desvivirá.
Tánger es una ciudad que ya no existe. De ahí lo de geografía imaginaria. Cada dos o tres años vuelvo por allí en busca del tiempo perdido: el de Paul Bowles, Jane Auer, Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote, Burroughs, Gore Vidal, Gregory Corso y toda la patulea de escritores extravagantes y más o menos beats que durante dos o tres décadas, cuando la ciudad era de gobierno internacional, convirtieron sus calles, sus zocos, sus burdeles, sus cafetines y sus antros de varia lección en epicentro de un maremoto de libertad y libertinaje.
Hablo de oídas. Yo no alcancé a conocer aquella Edad de Oro. Muchos españoles sí que lo hicieron y, además, cada uno según su estilo y su género, lo contaron. Eduardo Haro Tecglen, Ángel Vázquez, Emilio Vaz de Soto, Pepe Díaz, Jorge Verstrynge, Ramón Buenaventura… Eso sí que era multiculturalismo de buena ley. No como el de ahora. Les tengo envidia.
Les tengo envidia, sí, otro pecado capital, y seguro que por ella pico una y otra vez, muerdo un anzuelo sin lombriz, vuelvo a Tánger ―habré estado allí no menos de veinte veces―, compruebo que no queda nada, lo que se dice nada, ni una brizna, del esplendor de antaño, y me voy con las manos vacías.
Sic transit… Luego se me olvida y todo vuelve a empezar. Sé que dentro de unos años regresaré a Tánger y llegaré de nuevo a la conclusión de que allí no se me ha perdido nada precisamente porque se ha perdido todo.
Y si no es así, y me encuentro con el espíritu reencarnado de aquellas personas ―ellos, los de entonces― en cualquier punto de la ciudad que ya no existe, den por seguro que lo contaré.

Leyendo tu artículo sobre Tánger no puedo dejar de pensar en mi reciente viaje a Bali. Viaje que había postergado una y otra vez, e idealizado gracias, en gran parte, a “El Camino del Corazón”. Te puedo decir que también sentí envidia de los que como tú descubrieron Bali en los 60´ o todavía más de los llegaron allí mucho antes. Lamentable Kuta Beach con sus australianos borrachos camiseta en mano. Por suerte todavía se puede huir en moto a cualquier parte de la isla y recorrer en paz los caminos parándose en los templos y arrozales, o en cualquier puesto de refrescos a conversar con sus amables gentes.
