Tribulaciones de un español en China
¡Últimas noticias del Imperio! Acabo de volver de allí. Durante un par de meses lo he recorrido de punta a cabo: no sólo las megalópolis que todo el mundo conoce y de las que hasta el último gato se hace lenguas, sino también la estepa, los desiertos uigures, los oasis de la Ruta de la Seda, los estribos tibetanos, el subidón del Karakorum, las gargantas del Yangtsé, los bosques de bambú en los que aún trisca el panda, los arrozales plácidos, las mínimas aldeas, los mercados cuatreros y matuteros de la legendaria Kashgar… Emerjo ahora, confuso, de ese calidoscopio con el espíritu tan atribulado como el del chino de la novela de Julio Verne a la que alude, en paráfrasis, el título de mi crónica.
¡Lasciate ogni speranza, oh cari petimetres de Bruselas! ¡Poned en hora vuestros despertadores! ¡Espabilad, desperezaos, rezad lo que sepáis! No ignoro que cuando visitáis Pekín, Hong Kong o Shanghai en viajes de oficio con beneficio cuyo presupuesto corre a cargo del contribuyente vuestra principal preocupación, y ocupación, es la de comprar rolex falsos, antigüedades recién fabricadas y otras baratijas, pero si yo estuviese —Dios me libre— metido en vuestros zapatos de charol incluiría en la agenda de la tournée un capitulillo dedicado a averiguar cómo y por qué las gentes del Sudeste asiático, capitaneadas por los chinos, están moviéndonos la silla bajo el trasero mientras seguís papando moscas y estudiando las costumbres de las musarañas.
Del Imperio, dije más arriba, y no del próximo imperio, como tan a menudo decís vosotros, uncidos a la oxidada noria de la machacona matraca del peligro amarillo. ¿Peligro? ¡Pero hombres de Dios! ¿Cómo va a ser peligro si ya ha dejado de ser un futurible? Proyéctese en Bruselas la película Poltergeist. Es aún pronto, lo admito, para determinar en qué medida los sueños de la nueva razón (social) de un mundo sometido al canon chino producirán monstruos, aunque me temo que alguno habrá y no será simpático, pero lo único que de momento importa es cobrar clara conciencia de que, sea como fuere, ¡ya están aquí, ya están aquí! Hasta un niño —o niña: la de Poltergeist— lo vería, pero los politeólogos (no es errata) de Bruselas siguen en lo suyo, que es discutir sobre el sexo de la vecina del quinto o lo que ocultan los calzones cienciológicos de Brad Pitt mientras los turcos, digo, los chinos, nos rodean. Bueno… También lo hacen los turcos, pero eso es otra historia atizada y orquestada con música de chirimías por la poética de jarchas del justiciero lunático de La Moncloa.
A lo que iba. En Europa no quieren enterarse de que si el primer milenio fue del Mediterráneo y el segundo del Atlántico, éste de ahora —recién nacido, sí, pero no nascituro, como algunos creen— lo es ya del Pacífico. Las líneas de fuerza de la Historia se cuecen, vidrian y fraguan despacio, como los terremotos y las erupciones volcánicas, pero son, cuando por fin afloran, incontenibles e irreversibles. Que se lo pregunten a Spengler.
Inútil, por meridiana, debería ser la apostilla de que no son sólo los chinos —continentales, taiwaneses, singapureños o transterrados que sean— quienes se están zampando el mundo, sino también, con eficaz toreo al alimón, casi todos los restantes pueblos del Sudeste asiático: los indios (a la distancia de un cuello), los vietnamitas (pisándoles los talones y arreando), los tailandeses, los indonesios, los malayos, los surcoreanos… De Japón, ¿qué voy a contarles que ya no sepan?
De verdad, amigos: no hay nada que hacer. Todo está hecho. Estudien mandarín y olvídense del inglés. Casi nadie, por cierto, y en contra de lo que se cree por aquí, lo habla por allí. El aeropuerto Kennedy, comparado con el de Shanghai (o, incluso, con el de Bangkok), es un aeródromo de novela de Saint-Exupery. Imaginen lo que va a ser Pekín después de las Olimpiadas. Cada seis meses surge en China un Manhattan frente al cual es quiero y no puedo el de la Gran Manzana. Hay ya en China cien millones de multimillonarios y miríadas de coolies sin trenzas ni sombreros cónicos que se agarran como zarcillos de plantas trepadoras a inverosímiles andamios de bambú y levantan en un amén rascacielos que hacen cumplido honor a su hombre. El Empire, a su lado, es una chabola. Los chinos habrían reconstruido las Torres Gemelas en un week-end. Puttong —que así se llama, no piensen mal—, la formidable sky line surgida de la nada en lo que hasta hace muy poco era, frente al Bund y en la otra orilla del río, campo abierto de Shanghai, es ahora un escenario asombrosamente parecido al de la película Blade Runner. Quienes allí viven son replicantes. Que el cielo de tal modo adentellado nos ayude. Delenda est cuanto fue Europa.
Y que nadie se confunda. Lo que cuento no es, como tantos —aferrándose al último clavo al rojo de su ciega esperanza— creen, asunto que sólo incumbe a las grandes ciudades del litoral. Olvídense de ello. Ya no hay China Profunda que valga, y lo poco que de ella queda está en desalada fase de extinción. ¿Confucio, el Tao, Buda, la porcelana exquisita, los sutiles poemas, el I Ching, los emperadores, los mandarines, las concubinas de pies diminutos, los templos colgados de las rocas sobre la vertical del vacío? Paparruchas. Surgió Mao, llegó la Larga Marcha, reinó durante media centuria el comunismo, hizo de las suyas la jauría botellonera de los guardias rojos al hilo de la revolución cultural y estalló luego, y en ella siguen, la mayor orgía de desarrollismo a todo trapo que hasta el día de la fecha ha conocido el mundo. ¿Cómo iba a quedar en pie algo, así fuese una simple y desmayada hoja caída del árbol del ayer, fuera de unos pocos calcos de escayola incesantemente repintada para satisfacer el apetito plebeyo de las hordas de turistas que sólo piensan en sacar fotos, grabar vídeos, profanar los templos, hollar el césped, enviar postales y comprar camisetas? Pavoroso. Y, además, por todo, encima, cobran, incluso por contemplar un lago, admirar un ventisquero, ascender a un picacho, descender a un valle o recorrer un bosque. Las ciudades son clónicas, repetidas ad nauseam, y el país entero, surcado por tremendas autopistas y aplastado por un urbanismo inmisericorde, pronto será una calavera calva con revoco de cemento.
Vaya, en consecuencia a China, el sociólogo, el politólogo, el futurólogo, el empresario, y encontrará chicha en la que hincar el diente, pero no lo haga quien, como yo, juegue a ser Ulises, Marco Polo o Stanley. Mi decepción corre pareja a la del tamaño de ese país.
Di sendas conferencias en los departamentos de español de un par de universidades y todos sus alumnos —todos, digo, sin una sola excepción— inquirieron, extrañados, tras oírme, que para qué diantre sirve leer un libro y confesaron, con diabólica inocencia, que ellos nunca lo habían hecho, pues estudiaban con el exclusivo propósito de entrar en una empresa o, mejor aún, de fundarla. Saber español es cosa altamente rentable en China.
Cara y cruz, pues, de un país que se engalla y pisa fuerte sobre las baldosas amarillas del sendero de la prosperidad, pero en cuyos múltiples y aún, a veces, exóticos ámbitos se escucha, unánime, un solo imperativo categórico: ¡Ganar dinero, ganar dinero, ganar dinero!
¡Es la economía, estúpidos! Kant ha muerto sin que nadie le dedique exequias. Poco o nada cabe hacer. Sigamos en las nubes. España, por ejemplo, acaba de clausurar el único vuelo directo que nos unía a Pekín. Yo he venido en él, y era como volar hacia las ruinas de Itálica. No hay en estos momentos un solo avión español que sobrepase, hacia el este, Estambul. Clarividencia se llama eso, y sentido de la oportunidad.
Prosiga mientras tanto Europa, monocorde, tarareando en los oídos sordos de China la cantilena de los derechos humanos, la libertad de expresión y asociación, el pluralismo político, la democracia, el Estado social, las inalienables conquistas de los trabajadores y otros sonsoniquetes por el estilo, y verán para lo que sirve eso. ¿Lo digo? ¡Ea! Servirá para que los chinos, sonriendo, se froten las manos y piensen que si los perros ladran es porque la caravana sigue. ¿Qué tal si pusiéramos los pies en la tierra con algo más de cordura, pragmatismo e, inclusive, una pizca de cinismo?
No disparen contra mí. No ahorquen al mensajero. Mi pregunta es retórica. Ni ciego de marihuana me atrevería a insinuar con tanta corrección política como está cayendo que la cantilena mencionada es ociosa o perniciosa. Me limito a dar cuenta de lo que en China he visto y a explicar a quienes mandan en el mundo donde nací que a los chinos la copla en cuestión les suena, precisamente, a chino, a palabrería, a letra y lengua muertas, y punto.
Están, por cierto, los habitantes de tan remoto país más contentos que un buda pachón y panzón. Tienen un gobierno invisible que se les da de comunista, pero que se las ha ingeniado para desarrollar el más eficiente sistema de capitalismo que jamás haya existido y que, como papá y mamá en el ámbito de la familia, se encarga de resolver todas y cada una de las pejigueras de la cosa pública, lo que permite a sus súbditos entregarse por completo a lo que de verdad les gusta: fundar empresas, comerciar, fabricar, invertir… Ganar dinero.
¡Y vaya si lo están ganando!
Señores de Bruselas: vuelvo al principio… Salgan, por favor, de su letargo, convénzanse de que no son los reyes de la fiesta, déjense de cuentos chinos, sí, chinos, y súbanse al pescante del tren de la Historia o resígnense a ser lo que, de seguir así, muy pronto serán: engalonados y bien planchados almirantes de un buque que se va a pique. Europa será pronto Tercer Mundo.
Impuestos, moralina institucional, maniqueísmo ideológico, repulgos de beata, sindicatos, subvenciones, proteccionismo, intervencionismo… La sociedad se ahoga.
Umberto Eco dijo, socarrón, hace varias décadas que el mundo se acabaría por tala de árboles y subsiguiente asfixia cuando los chinos decidieran limpiarse el culo con papel higiénico. Pues bien: ya lo hacen. Respiren hondo, atesoren oxígeno y aténganse a las consecuencias. El tercer milenio está servido.
Fernando, si mis deseos no se truncan también visitaré el ‘Reino Medio’ en poco tiempo. Me gusto, me regodeo, disfruto aprendiendo chino(HanYu), y espero perfeccionarlo en Beijing. Quizá, cuando los mandamases occidentales se vean reflejados en tal eficaz sistema productivo, echen cuentas de lo desproporcionado de un sistema basado solamente en la ‘pela’,,,y entonces será, si no siendo ya como dices, demasiado tarde…
No creo que el espíritu o filosofía china clásica haya sido enterrado u olvidado; de sobra es sabido el espíritu pragmático de dicho pueblo. Ha llegado más bien a su cénit. La inercia de esta impresionante apisonadora, hará el resto.

Magnífico el artículo de Sánchez Drago Tribulaciones de un español en China. Ya hace tiempo que pienso que ocurrirá lo que él dice pues, por razones profesionales, llevo viajando por toda Asia desde hace 30 años. La sociedad europea es absolutamente decadente, envejecida, acomodaticia y cobarde y por ello está condenada a pasar a un segundo, más bien a un tercer término, pues la norteamericana todavía se mantendrá en pie por más tiempo. Vivimos una utopía de derechos humanos, libertad sin límites razonables, corrupción y degradación de la Justicia que se está volviendo en contra nuestra. Mientras tanto, las sociedades asiáticas sólo piensan en producir más y competir a toda costa, lo que sin duda están consiguiendo. Ya no existe la China interior con la que nuestros inefables políticos nos puedan amenazar como contrapunto a su maravillosa forma de regir nuestros destinos. La verdadera amenaza es que más pronto que tarde, seremos para ellos lo que durante muchos años fueron ellos para nosotros. De todas formas, no hay nada nuevo bajo el sol. La Historia es la gran maestra de la vida y la que confirma que el hombre es el único animal que tropieza, no una, sino múltiples veces en la misma piedra.
Me alegro de que un tema tan manido como el levantamiento del dragón se vea enriquecido con tu lenguaje castizo. Disfrute mucho al leerlo en El Mundo.
Pienso que hace tiempo que la cultura mundial se polarizo al Pacífico, más o menos entre Osaka y Sillicon Valley. Pero ciertamente la dimensión del asunto chino va más alla de unos cuantos ensayos exitosos. Espero viajar pronto a Hong Kong a visitar a una amiga y disfrutar plenamente del delirio.

Eso de que los chinos no lean me lleva a pensar que es tan pernicioso para la China que 1200 millones de chinos no lean como para España lo es que 40 millones de españoles no lean. En la misma medida. ¡Qué cosas tiene el guarismo!
Llevo un tiempo imaginando que un día nos levantaremos y al bajar a la calle a comprar el pan pasaremos delante de una tienda de chinos -como la llama todo el mundo- y habrá un cartel en la puerta que rezará: “Se busca empleado. 8 horas diarias, 2000 euros mensuales”. Pronto todos trabajarán para ellos, todos ganarán dinero gracias a ellos y para ellos. Subirá la inflacción desorbitadamente y de la noche a la mañana se habrán hecho dueños de todo. Eso es lo que imagino. Es muy gráfico aquello de harán con nosotros lo que Occidente hizo con ellos…

Sr. Sanchez Dragó: es el primer intento de comunicarme con usted. Soy algo mayor que usted (1933). Ya he leído Gárgolis y Habidis tres veces. La última vez no lo entendí y entonces estoy volviendo a leerlo. Espero no volver a entenderlo, que es lo que creo que es precisamente lo que usted persigue. En el dorso de la edición hacen mención a “muchos y simultáneos niveles de lectura”. Coincido, aunque con reparos. Intenté leelo por primera vez en abril de 2004. El libro lo compré en la Feria del Libro en Buenos Aires y su precio era irrisorio (2 pesos, o dólares, era lo mismo en esa época maldita, podrida en Buenos Aires) . Lo hojeé (¿o mejor, lo ojeé?) y lo descarté de momento. Pero mi esposa más prudente prefirió comprarlo, total era tan poco dinero… Yo comencé a leerlo y al otro día fui a comprar 3 ejemplares más. Mi cuñado fue un beneficiario de un ejemplar. Beato incurable, leyó a la página 2 y lo descartó. Creo que es el mayor elogio que usted puede recibir.
Bien, establecido el contacto con usted, termino este mail y vuelvo al libro. ya quedó atrás el capítulo IV referente al Camino de Santiago.

La verdad es que siento un poco de nostalgia de haberme perdido lo que verdaderamente fue y pudieron disfrutar los viajeros de antes de la revolución (en China) y los de antes de la globalización (en casi el resto del mundo). No obstante, asumo que vivimos en el mejor de los mundos conocidos. (R. Paniker). Y tenemos la grandísima fortuna de poder realizar maravillosos viajes en el espacio y en el tiempo a través de los libros. Accesibles hoy para casi todo el mundo.
El mundo es así. Hay una evolución (positiva o negativa) continua y no se sabe hacia donde vamos.
Agradecería mucho a toda esta gente que entiende que nuestra capacidad de percepción sensorial es limitada (y por ello entienden que se nos escapa todo un mundo, -llamemosle espiritual) que se hicieran oir en el mundo científico, que es donde hay que hacer la revolución!!.
Y por otro lado, gracias Fernando. Por todo. Agradecería que, aprovechando ese torrente de energía que tienes nos regalases otra novela tuya contando cómo eran esos mundos que tu conociste de joven y que nosotros, los mas jóvenes que tú, irremediablemente nos hemos perdido. Si bien cuando estoy total y completamente en desacuerdo critico duramente sus posturas (dado que mi sentido del respeto me obliga a no hacer de la falsedad argumental mi bandera, no sea que el metodo europeo se me pegue en exceso), en esta ocasion no puedo mas que estar de acuerdo – con menos datos empiricos, es cierto – con su vision.
Hace años que personalmente vengo tratando de no dormirme en mi forma de hacer negocios, y ciertamente funciona. O el Europeo espabila o efectivamente seremos el nuevo tercer mundo.
Hasta ahora a mi ritmo (pues mi trabajo me impide dedicarle mas) estaba estudiando Japonés, pero esta claro que también tendré que abordar el mandarin.
Al resto del mundo, en esta ocasion, si no creen lo que leen en este post, vuelvan a mirar, pero sin el prisma de prejuicios Europeo.

Pues no es la cosa tan evidente, ahora la bolsa de Pekin ha caido un 12 % y es que se puede estar engañando a una persona siempre y a muchas personas alguna vez pero a todas las personas siempre es imposible.
Los productos chinos ya sean textil, juguetes, electrónica, vehículos, o medicamentos, tienen una calidad pésima, claro con un precio muy competitivo pero a la larga esa baja calidad repercute en las ventas, ya la gente se está dando cuenta que no vale la pena comprar “made in china” pues es tirar el dinero.
Una cosa si que me gusta de China y es que allí no existe la propiedad del suelo, el suelo es como el agua, un medio vital sin dueño, por lo que para poner una fábrica solo necesitas un permiso y levantar la nave con tus medios, si quieres una casa enorme te la levantas pero el suelo es del pais, nunca tuyo.
si los idiotas de los españoles funcionaramos así, todo el capital invertido en suelo y propiedad inmobiliaria estaría invertido en comercio e industria y seriamos igual de prosperos que China, pero seguro que igual de chapuzas pues el I+D no es lo que mejor se le dá al Español.
