Fue en Sevilla, el 28 de abril de 2001. José Tomás cogió la muleta con la mano izquierda y citó de largo a un toro de Núñez del Cuvillo. Silencio sideral en La Maestranza. Un grito —certero, oportuno, jondo— lo rasgó: «¡Viva el Rey!» Dos orejas, otra en su segundo y Puerta del Príncipe abierta a la inmortalidad.
El círculo se cierra: 98 días que conmovieron España. Los que van desde el 17 de junio hasta el 23 de septiembre del año en curso. José Tomás —Yo, el Rey— reapareció en Barcelona una semana antes de que los barceloneses encendieran las fogatas de San Juan y ha puesto fin a su verano peligroso la víspera del día de la Merced, fiesta mayor de la ciudad. ¿Significa eso algo? ¿Es azar? ¿Es estrategia? ¿Es desafío, adorno, desplante, símbolo?
Imposible saberlo. Tomás es una esfinge. Mira, escucha, sonríe poco y calla. Es como Manolete: un torero seco. Sabe que no hay autoridad sin laconismo (lo dijo Saint Just), ni grandeza con grandilocuencia, y él las tiene —grandeza y autoridad— ganadas a pulso de capote, muleta y acero. Es el Rey, y todos lo saben. Todos, incluso los cronistas cicateros que lo acusan de no torear toros que lo sean de verdad (¡pues si llegan a serlo! Málaga, Linares…) y de no haber pisado ni una sola vez en la temporada de su reaparición el ruedo de las grandes plazas. Tranquilícense, mis cuates, que todo se andará. Tranquilícese también Ruiz Quintano, picaflor y camorrista de la pluma que no toca pelo y que con su segundo apellido desmiente el dicho de que no hay quinto malo. No se ganó Troya en una hora. Dentro de unos meses, cuando toque, Valencia, Sevilla, Madrid, Bilbao… serán clamor, escollera de emociones y rompeolas de ovaciones.

Era ya eso, para mí, como para Joaquín Sabina, Vicente Amigo, Jorge Sanz, Albert Boadella, Sophie Calle, Matías Antolín, Anya Bartels, Gonzalo Santonja, Ruiz Portella y tantos otros, casi una costumbre, una adicción. Lo habíamos hecho ya, y yo lo conté aquí mismo, tres meses antes, el día en que su serenísima majestad regresó del destierro para recuperar el trono que desde su marcha permanecía vacante.
Y lo recuperó en el acto, con unánime aquiescencia, desde el mismo momento en que su capa acarició por primera vez el aire, porque cuando el león sube a la horquilla del árbol o baja al abrevadero y ruge, la selva, sobrecogida, enmudece.
Pensaba, ya digo, en esas cosas, en Hemingway, el Partenón y Las Meninas, que a todo el mundo —entendido o no, aficionado o no— conmueven, y en las 37 cornadas recibidas por Antonio Ordóñez, un torero rayano, pese a ello, en la perfección, y en las muchas que otro matador pluscuamperfecto —José Tomás— había sufrido a lo largo del dangerous summer que ya tocaba a su fin, y en la posibilidad de que ese torero fuera un ángel y su cuerpo, glorioso, porque torea siempre en vertical, sin arrodillarse nunca, sin dar zapatazos en la arena, sin dejar rastro de su pisada en el albero, con los ojos vueltos hacia el alma y con las alas de ésta —perfil, figura, empaque, gesto, capote y muleta— permanentemente desplegadas.
¿Un ángel? Más. Un arcángel fieramente humano.
Iba yo, en consecuencia, hacia la plaza, rumiando pensamientos, buscando símiles, acuñando tropos e hilvanando trozos de memoria, pero sobre seguro, pues tal es el privilegio de los ángeles: no defraudar nunca a los humanos.
Y así fue. José Tomás nunca defrauda a nadie. No sabe, no quiere, no puede. Don de majestad, don de santidad: con verlo, con que esté, con que exista, con que pise la plaza, vale. Y si además torea… Eso es el cielo. No me pregunten la razón. Yo no lo entiendo ni falta que me hace. Lo siento, y basta, porque vivir es sentir y sentir es saber. Y quien no lo sienta, entendido o no, aficionado o no, acongójese y vaya al psicoanalista, a urgencias o al confesionario, porque carece de sensibilidad y su dolencia es grave.
