El planeta convertido en una bola de billar donde no pueda crecer ni una lechuga: ése es el sueño de Pequín y de quienes no sólo en China, sino en todas partes, han confundido la sociedad con el Estado y el progreso con el desarrollo. Es la eterna lucha entre la naturaleza, que a la larga, exterminándonos, vencerá, y la Historia. ¡Mal rayo parta a ésta!
Seré concreto, pondré unos cuantos ejemplos…
Los chinos están construyendo (y van, como siempre, a toda mecha) la autopista de un millón de carriles que unirá Pequín y Bangkok. ¡Agárrense, que vienen rectas! Ese Yang Tse de asfalto y de monóxido tajará Laos (uno de los últimos ecosistemas relativamente vírgenes), pasará por Luang Prabang, devastada ya por las hordas mochileras y el esnobismo de los franceses, y sobrevolará el Mekong, entre otros muchos paraísos que a partir de ese instante pasarán a engrosar la lista de los purgatorios y los infiernos.
En Vientián, capital de Laos y ciudad aún maravillosa, en la que viven (o vivían en 2005) doscientos mil habitantes, los chinos se disponen a levantar un barrio de viviendas de estilo comunista para treinta y cinco mil familias… chinas, naturalmente. Echen cálculos. En esa Chinatown, a razón de diez miembros (y miembras de Bibiana) por cada familia, lo que tratándose de chinos no es mucho suponer (ya saben: esposa, concubina, dos suegras, dos hijos, un marido y tres esclavos), vivirán más personas que en el resto de Vientián.
